Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip Movie Review & Interview with Bella Thorne

Looking for a family friendly movie to see this weekend? Alvin and the Chipmunks are back and they are headed out for road trip! Last weekend my family was invited to see an early screening of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip and I also had the opportunity to interview Miami native Bella Thorne, who plays Ashley in the movie.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS THE ROAD CHIP

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip stars Jason Lee as the chipmunks father Dave, who the boys believe is about to propose to his new girlfriend during a business trip to Miami. The boys fear that once Dave proposes they will be left on the side of the road – and head out on a “road chip” to stop the proposal, prevent losing Dave as their father, but ultimately to ensure they do not inherit an evil stepbrother.

All Dave wants is to give the boys some normalcy in their lives, but we all know that Alvin wants to be a superstar. The chipmunks know how to party it up, and Alvin is ready to rock and roll. As Dave leaves to Miami, the boys come up with a plan to follow him and stop the proposal. Their adventures take them into the skies but as one thing leads to another, they are discovered by an Air Marshall that has his sights on capturing the boys and preventing them from getting to Miami. Left with no choice but to road trip their way to their destination, Alvin, Simon and Theodore set out on a hilarious adventure. Will they make it to Miami to stop the proposal or will the Air Marshall capture them? My girls, ages 2 and 3, really enjoyed the movie and were dancing the entire time in their seats. So be sure to bring the little ones to see the Chipmunks and their friends the Chipettes! Interview with Bella Thorne (Ashley)

Q: What first attracted you to the role? Or do you want to tell us about your audition process.

Bella: I had a meeting with the director and he said “you’re the girl, you’re her.” He said he wanted to incorporate my actual music into the movie and we did. So one of the songs I actually sing is one of my songs.

Q: Born in Pembroke Pines, raised in Miami, do you consider yourself a Broward girl or Miami girl?

Bella: Miami girl!

Q: So how was it filming down here in your hometown (Miami)?

Bella: I didn’t get to film in Miami. Although the scene was in Miami, due to scheduling I filmed in Atlanta.

Q: How do you prepare for a role like this where you are opposite animated characters, do you talk to yourself a lot?

Bella: No, no, you don’t do any of that. you just kind of act with them, alongside them. You have people reading their lines that are in red and green shirts so you know which characters they are, in case you can’t memorize them. They were really nice those guys and you have little stuffed animals, you have like 10 takes minimum just for the animals, without any direction from the director. They have green stuffies, and then they take them out and then they do a regular pass with nothing there, just tape marks and then they do a pass with balls in gold and silver colors and then they have to go around and shoot 360 and you have to stand still. There is so much that happens which is why I wanted to work on an animated film.

Q: How have you managed to stay humble?

Bella: I am a pretty regular girl, I do regular things. I spend a lot of time with my family which definitely keeps me grounded. I don’t know how people get so caught up. I don’t go to a lot of events, I am not really in the Hollywood scene.

Q: Which do you like better, acting or music?

Bella: Definitely acting. When people ask me if I sing, I usually say no.

Q: You do a lot of social good and charitable work, what brought you to those organizations that you selected?

Bella: I am so happy to be where I am and so blessed and lucky, and although I have been put in the time, luck does take a big toll. I want to give to people some of what I have, so that’s why I do a lot of charity work. I grew up doing charity work, it’s always been a big deal in my family. The Thirst Project is one of my favorites. I work a lot with the Dyslexia foundation and a few others.

Side note: Bella herself is dyslexic, so her dream of becoming an actor was not an easy feat, she overcame a lot to get to where she is.

Q: Would you consider being behind the scenes?

Bella: I want to study directing and writing, its a really big thing for me. I like to work closely with my directors.

Q: If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing?

Bella: I can’t think of one other thing that I would want to do with my life. Singing is great, and I love dancing, and writing, but acting is the one thing I love best.

Q: You are half Cuban, how does that influence the roles that you select?

Bella: I guess I don’t really take that into consideration so much. If the character is very spicy and has a lot of attitude I know I can do that.

Q: You write, you sing, you act, you dance, you want to direct, is there anything you don’t do?

Bella: I don’t have a perfume line.
