The hit Broadway musical Waitress will be at the Arsht Center through March 3rd for a very limited engagement, and I am thrilled that my husband and I were able to attend Opening Night on behalf of Mama’s Mission. Being a huge Broadway fan, I knew this musical would not disappoint. But, I really did not expect to love it as much as I did!

The touring company includes Christine Dwyer (“Jenna”), Maiesha McQueen (“Becky”), Ephie Aardema (“Dawn”), Steven Good (“Dr. Pomatter”), Matt DeAngelis (“Earl”), “Ryan G. Dunkin (“Cal), and Jeremy Morse (“Ogie”), with Richard Kline as “Joe”. Christine Dwyer’s voice is outstanding! And I’m about 99% sure that I saw her as Elphaba in the touring company of Wicked a few years back. Maiesha McQueen and Ephie Aardema are impeccably cast as Jenna’s best friends and co-workers Becky and Dawn, respectively. The supporting cast and the six-piece band that appears stage left throughout the musical round out the perfectly cast ensemble.

Waitress will make you laugh and cry! It’s important to point out though that as entertaining a show as it is, it is not kid-friendly. Children ages 15-17 might be okay, but the show does include strong language, centers around marital abuse and infidelity, and sexual acts are depicted – in a humorous manner, but still somewhat graphic. The show has a run-time of two hours and 30 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission.
