3 Tips for Better Health – Start Smart, Stay Active and Keep Fit!

This blog post was sponsored by Coca-Cola but the opinions are completely my own based on my experience in trying to achieve better health for myself and my family.

Many years ago before I had moved to Florida I used to visit a friend of mine that lived in Tampa. I would usually come down for about two weeks at a time and just enjoy the beautiful weather, the slower paced lifestyle and the ease of life in general. I also made much smarter and better health choices back then, took better care of myself in general and ate better. Something about the laid back lifestyle made things easier.

Then I moved to Florida and things changed. Life was life and things didn’t seem as laid back as when I was just vacationing. Time would fly by, things needed to get done, and bad choices in food became a part of my life. Recently I was in Las Vegas for work – my first time EVER in Vegas. I was hesitant to go because I was already feeling sick with a pretty bad cold, but I packed my bags and headed out the door anyway. While in Vegas my body was telling me that maybe I should have stayed home. Half way through my visit to Vegas I found myself at an Urgent Care center. As part of the routine practice I was asked to get on the scale.

It’s been a while since I’ve been on the scale, but I already knew what it was going to tell me – GET OFF! Well, not in so many words, but the dial just didn’t want to stop. I was forced to face the music, turns out I’ve gained more weight than I had allowed myself to believe. And I didn’t like it one bit. By the time I had gotten back to my hotel room I had already decided that it was time to do something – anything, to get myself and my health, back on track.

I had just started using a fitness tracker and sleep monitor wearable bracelet that was sent to me as part of this campaign to Start Smart in the new year, Stay Active and Keep Fit. When I set it up I did so quickly without giving it much thought. Sitting in my hotel room trying to give my body a rest I decided to open the app and really look it over, set it up properly and start on my road to better health. So maybe Vegas isn’t the best place to try to start being healthy, but any little start is better than nothing (we won’t talk about what I ate while there.)

I was never more excited to come back home and really get started. I headed to Albertsons to load up the fridge with better choices. I still remember my first time shopping at an Albertsons store those many years ago during my visits to Tampa. The stores were always well stocked, clean, better than reasonably priced and the employees were always super friendly. Albertsons had a great selection of healthy products that would complement my new lifestyle. I stocked up on fruits and veggies, Odwalla Smoothies, Simply Orange – orange juice with delicious fruit combinations like mango, pineapple and pulp free, as well as came across Fairlife Milk. I’ve never seen this milk before, and after reading the carton noticed it has 50% more protein and 30% more calcium than ordinary milk – the girls could definitely use that in their diet, especially Preemie who has become a “picky” eater.

Since I do the food shopping for our family it’s up to me to create new habits so we can all adopt healthy behaviors. Monkey see, monkey do, right? And the girls take cues from everything we do – telling them to eat their veggies isn’t the same as showing them we eat ours. By making healthier choices, like adding a glass of Simply Orange to our breakfast, we can easily maintain a balanced diet. Better health is easy to achieve – once you set your mind to it. Your body knows what it needs, you just need to start listening. Check out these tips for better health to help you get started on the road to a better you!

3 Tips for Better Health – Start Smart, Stay Active and Keep Fit!

Exercise – even if it’s just a short walk around the neighborhood, take the stairs instead of the elevator, take the dog for an extra walk each day. Rise and shine each morning with a cold glass of Simply Orange juice for kick-start with Vitamin C to help get you moving. All that matters is that you get moving. Using a fitness tracker helps you set goals and keep track of how you are doing.

Eat Right – drink plenty of water, eat your fruits and vegetables, and control your food portion sizes. If you don’t have time for your daily recommended intake of fruits and veggies, opt for an Odwalla smoothie. Portion size really matters – use a small kitchen food scale to guide you in the beginning, or the old “no bigger than a deck of cards” serving guide.

Sleep – make sure to get plenty of sleep, the recommended amount is 8-10 hours a day. Without the right amount of sleep your body just doesn’t function right, your digestive system doesn’t work right and as you probably well know – you simply don’t feel right. A glass of warm Fairlife Milk before bed helps put me and the girls to sleep each night.

For a chance to win your own Misfit Shine Fitness + Sleep monitor, be sure to save your receipt from your next shopping trip at Albertsons (or Safeway)! • I would almost think you were talking about me in this article. I have gained about twenty five pounds since my son passed away almost ten years ago now. I stopped exercising and I ate anything I wanted. The first of the year I decided to change that. It is funny that some of this information came from coca cola. That is probably my biggest short fall. I appreciate these suggestions. I have now lost five pounds and hoping to lose the rest before my sons wedding in April. I am also feeling much better. This article was very encouraging.

  • I love Odwalla Smoothies and have been using them since early 2015 when I decided to get fit and eat healthy for my new years resolution. I introduced them to my son about 2mths later and he loves them as well. They really are good and dont leave an after taste like some do.

  • Thanks for the tips for better health. It was a reminder and wake up call for me to improve and take better care of myself. Regarding eat healthy, I do but I constantly have to remind myself to drink more water to stay hydrated. Also, the goal of 8-10 hours of sleep is something I need to work on. I only get around 6 hours of sleep each night.

  • You try out a new workout routine. Two days later, you read about another new fitness program and try a little bit of that. You make little progress in either program and so you start searching for something better.
