Everyone that knows me, knows I prefer baking and spending time with my children than cleaning. I know there are people who love to clean, I do too, I just don’t like spending unnecessary time doing so. Where I can find shortcuts, I take them. Especially in the kitchen.
The kitchen and bathroom are two rooms that MUST be clean. Who wants to cook in or eat from a dirty kitchen, right? With a hubby and a teenager, plus two little ones in the house, the kitchen is one of the rooms that sees the most action. Especially now that J-bird has learned to cook and bake for himself.
The same way I would show and teach Jason when I am cooking in the kitchen, my newest partner, Em, loves helping out. She’s on break from preschool for two weeks before starting summer camp and each day I am trying to do something new and different with her. This week we had a blast, especially making cupcakes.
We made Blue Cupcakes! Officially called the Dawn Ultra Blue Velvet Cupcakes with Easy Vanilla Buttercream. These cupcakes were a blast to make and you can find the recipe here. I also used the opportunity to reaffirm colors with Em while making them. When is the last time you got to make cupcakes from scratch, with your kiddos?
So Em and I got to baking, and making a mess. Yeah, blue food coloring, flour, and sprinkles make for a toddlers dream come true. And a mother’s kitchen nightmare. Or so I thought, over and over again. Until I finally started cleaning. See, I like the wait until after the kids go to bed to start cleaning the kitchen. The process isn’t quick or easy normally, so I don’t like to waste daylight hours, I would rather spend with the kids, cleaning.
Did you notice that the recipe called for vegetable oil? Do you know what happens when you use a plastic measuring cup for vegetable oil? It never wants to come out! Well, I wanted to put Dawn Ultra through the test, so instead of leaving that greasy cup for last, I cleaned it first. Normally I would have to clean the cup, rinse my sponge, apply more soap, clean it again, rinse, repeat, and so on, until finally that greasy feeling would disappear. Not this time!
Dawn Ultra took care of cleaning the measuring cup right the first time, and I didn’t even notice the grease on the sponge, so I just continued to clean the other dishes, including the plastic spatula, with blue food dye. It was as if I was using a new, freshly soaped, sponge each time I moved on to the next dish. With just a bit of soap on my sponge, I was able to clean an entire sink full of dishes. I was impressed, and it didn’t stop there.
Can you imagine my panic when I noticed the blue stains on my counter-top? I have an old porous counter-top, which seems to absorb color from anything that touches it. I really try to line the counter before cooking, and totally had forgotten. I tried cleaning the blue stains off with my usual spray, but I got no where real fast. The stains were still there! I grabbed the sponge that I had used earlier to clean the dishes and started to scrub. To my surprise there was still soap and suds coming from the sponge. I couldn’t believe that the Dawn Ultra was still packing a punch.
As for the stains, gone! As for saving my sanity, Dawn Ultra really came in clutch. Now I can worry not about wasting time, because cleaning is a breeze. Next time I will put Em to work helping me clean since Dawn Ultra will really be the only one working hard. I hereby declare this a #MyDawnSummer, a summer free to spend with your kids instead of with your dishes. With all the money you will be saving by using Dawn Ultra, you can treat yourself to something extra at the end of the week for being such an awesome smart mom!
With Dawn Ultra, I can leave the cleaning behind and get on with a day of learning and having fun with the girls. Do you use Dawn Ultra in your home? If not, I encourage you to take the Dawn Ultra challenge and see first hand how much money, time, and sanity, you can save yourself. How would you spend your new-found free time?
