Raising children as a single parent is not an easy task. My mama had to do it at a tender age after immigrating to the United States. She overcame all the obstacles in her way, made a name for herself and left a legacy for her children to be proud of. It wasn’t until I became a single mama that I truly learned to appreciate all that my mama had been, a real true life hero.
Although my girls will never get to meet mi mama, they will always know her through the stories I share with them. You see mi mama was #MiHeroeFavorito. She was brave, strong and tenía corazón de oro.
She taught me to be independent and strong like herself. Mi mama was everything I hope mis niñas will be when they grow up. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are pequeño and some are grande, but they all share the same trait, they all have a corazón de oro. Having a heart of gold allows heroes to do more and be more, not just for themselves, but for everyone around them, like mi mama.
My mama is not my only hero though. My other hero is about two (2) feet tall and weights about 18 lbs. Preemie, has been such a fighter and so strong, stronger than me! I truly feel like is carrying parts of my mothers corazón inside her. Everyday heroes are such an important part of our lives.
Some of them do not get the recognition they deserve for their brave acts. Like teachers, firefighters, police, doctors and anyone that touches your life in a special way. Teaching children to appreciate these everyday heroes is important. Disney’s Planes Fire & Rescue Blu-ray™ does a great job of portraying that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. It teaches children to become the best they can be. Challenging yourself to do something different is good and you can do anything if you believe in yourself.
Heroes don’t have to wear a cape, be able to fly or have “super” powers. A hero can be your friend, your mom, a firefighter, your teacher or even your dog. A hero can be big or small, size doesn’t matter, as long as they have un corazón de oro! Taking the time to watch Disney’s Planes Fire & Rescue Blu-ray™ during our weekend family movie time provided for a platform to discuss who our heroes are.
I asked Em who her hero was and her answer took me by surprise…see it in the video below:
