Halloween is one of my favorite holidays throughout the year. The girls love getting dressed up and meeting with friends for a safe and friendly trick or treat around the neighborhood. We like to start Halloween by reading our favorite Not-So-Scary Halloween Books. We love knocking on our neighbors and friends doors and shouting Trick or Treat! Last year the girls were Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen. This year we may have a Cinderella and a Ballerina. We haven’t yet decided. With Halloween just around the corner, a great way to introduce your child to this fun, but sometimes scary, holiday is through books. I’ve rounded up the best of the best Not-So-Scary Halloween books that your child will love. Also check out the Not-So-Scary Halloween movies for children.
Not-So-Scary Halloween Books Your Child Will Love
The Spooky Wheels on the Bus – A haunted Halloween bus ride that will have children singing with excitement. THE SPOOKY WHEELS ON THE BUS is a humorous Halloween-themed version of the classic song THE WHEELS ON THE BUS…with a few ghoulish tricks and treats up its sleeves! Count from One Spooky Bus up to Ten Goofy Ghosts as this Halloween ride races through town picking up a few unsuspecting passengers along the way. Okay, so this might be a bit spooky, but as promised, the list is all about Not-So-Scary Halloween Books!
The Little Old Lady Who Not Was Afraid of Anything – Here’s a fun reworking of a classic story. What do you do when a pair of lively shoes, pants shirt and pumpkin head are chasing you? You show no fear and come up with a clever solution that will put them all in place!
The Night Before Halloween – Little monsters and goofy goblins take center stage in this silly, spooky spin on Clement C. Moore’s beloved poem. But what will happen on Halloween when the monsters come face to face with human trick-or-treaters in this fun-filled book by the author of The Night Before Easter?
“‘Twas the night before Halloween, and all through the house, all the creatures were stirring, except for the mouse. The monsters had gathered to plan and prepare, for the trick-or-treaters who soon would be there?.”
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat – As Brother and Sister Bear don their costumes to go trick-or-treating by themselves for the first time, they plan to avoid Miz McGrizz’s spooky home. But during their Halloween outing, the cubs discover that appearances can be deceiving.
Spooky Pookie – It’s Halloween! What will little Pookie decide to be this year? Pookie tries on costumes one by one, but somehow can’t find just the right thing. The resolution to Pookie’s dilemma will delight toddlers and their caregivers alike. Told and illustrated with Sandra Boynton’s celebrated charm and pizzazz, Spooky Pookie has all the makings of a beloved Halloween classic. Boo!
Room on the Broom – The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon? This one and the next book are some of my favorite Not-So-Scary Halloween Books.
It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown – Spooky tricks and hilarious treats abound in this retelling of the beloved Halloween special that comes with holographic foil and embossing on the cover! Celebrate Halloween with Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang! It’s Halloween night, which means costumes, trick-or-treating, bobbing for apples…and waiting for the Great Pumpkin. Linus is certain that the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch to bring toys to all the children of the world. Could this be the year that it finally happens?
Clifford’s Halloween – Out of all the holidays, Emily Elizabeth and Clifford like Halloween the most. They play games, trick-or-treat in the neighborhood, and tell ghost stories. Best of all, they can wear costumes! Clown, witch, knight, or ghost–what will Clifford decide to dress up as this year?
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Mickey’s Halloween – Join Mickey and the rest of the Clubhouse gang in this ghostly tale! With over 40 flaps to peek under, this over-sized board book is full of all sorts of tricks and makes the perfect Halloween treat for your little one!
Curious George Haunted Halloween – Hang on to your hats! George gets spooked when he spends his first Halloween in the country and hears the legend of No Noggin—a headless scarecrow that kicks people’s hats off on Halloween! The man with the yellow hat tells George it’s just a legend, but with the help of his friends Allie and Bill, George is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery and find out once and for all if No Noggin really exists. This early reader features a festive bonus activity for even more Halloween fun with George! I love the Great Pumpkin, such a cute book! These are some great book suggestions.
There is a room on the broom movie on Netflix that my son found and he watches it all the time!! It is so super cute!! I love family friendly and not scary books and movies for younger kiddos to enjoy Halloween!! My son is just starting to have “bad dreams” so we tend to stray away from anything dark and spooky!!
I’m going to have to look for it! Thanks for letting me know.
I love the book collection for Halloween. I will be sure to get my son a few of them
I love Halloween but not the scary but the fun spooky part of it. Dressing up and enjoying the day. I like that there are books that have been written in this way for our children to enjoy and learn about the fun of Halloween.
