Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots: Because the Sex is in the Heels!

If you want to see a powerful performance, a story not only about friendship, inspiration, finding yourself and accepting who you are, then you need to go see Kinky Boots. I was invited to attend last nights sold out opening night performance, and not surprisingly so seeing as how this is the first time Kinky Boots has finally made its way down to South Florida. There was fashion, there was love, there was passion and most of all there was inspiration! Kinky Boots is storming the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami this week through Sunday, December 13, 2015.

Kinky Boots The Sex is in the Heels

I am always excited to see a new musical I’ve never seen before. Not my first time going in blind to watch a show, I did have high expectations simply based on the title, and my expectations were exceeded. The cast did a phenomenal job in their performances, even with just a few weeks under the belt for Adam Kaplan, who plays the lead role of Charlie, son of Price & Son around which the story centers. J. Harrison Ghee, starring as Lola/Simon took center stage with his beautiful costumes, HEELS and sassy talk. With 5+ years of Drag Queen experience under his belt, Ghee is a forced to be reckoned with. But one of the real scene-stealers was Don, the factory worker, stubborn and ignorant in his views – challenged by Lola to prove his manhood by accepting someone for who they are. The characters are all relatable in one way or another “for the men, the women and those who still haven’t made up their mind”, if you only take one thing away with you, I hope that it is an open mind. I have always enjoyed a good musical, but toss in a cabaret style drag show and you can sell me the Brooklyn Bridge.

Kinky Boots proves that you can change the world when you change your mind

Here’s a few things I learned last night:

  • The sex is in the HEELS
  • RED, RED, RED, RED!
  • Don’t be afraid to discover who you are
  • Really accept people for who they are

With a strong original musical score by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots the audience was in full swing moving and grooving to the beat. The musical also stars Miami native Juan Torres-Falcon who plays one of the Angels, and does an outstanding job representing Miami! Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots invites you to open your mind and accept others for who they are, no judgments – you might just find yourself along the way. Recommended for girls and boys who need to hear the powerful message of being themselves and accepting others for who they are. The phrase “walk a mile in my shoes” comes to mind when I think about all that Kinky Boots provokes audiences to think about.
