Hide all your holiday gifts and trimmings because the Grinch has promised to steal Christmas from South Florida! My daughter and I were invited to the opening night performance of Dr. Seuss’ How the GRINCH Stole Christmas! The Musical for a mommy and me date night. I was hesitant at first on whether to bring her along, worried that the Grinch might be too scary for her at 3 1/2 years old. So I actually showed her the movie with Jim Carrey to gauge her reaction. She was frightened at first by the big green monster, but this opened up the discussion about why the Grinch was the way he was and a few lessons were learned that night, including respect, love and caring about others.
If you are considering bringing along little ones, and I encourage you to do so, read the book or watch the movie first, use it as a tool for teaching your child about the real purpose of the Christmas holiday, about loving others unconditionally, and about giving. Then bring the entire family to see Dr. Seuss’ How the GRINCH Stole Christmas! The Musical which is stealing Christmas and the hearts of South Floridians at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, December 27, 2015. Read on to learn how you can score some amazing seats to see the Grinch for only $25!
The musicals beautifully designed sets and costumes are inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original book, and get a refreshing new outlook thanks in part to the music and book by Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason. The cast and ensemble were magnificent in their portrayal of the loveable Whos from Whoville, with a narration by “Old Max” aka Max the Dog telling the tale of the big green monster Grinch stealing Christmas, learning about love, and finding his own heart. Two favorite musical numbers find their way onstage “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “One of a Kind” – which as it turns out is the Grinch’s absolutely favorite song because it’s all about him! The soundtrack is most definitely “One of a Kind”, which is exactly what I am listening to as I type this.
You and your family will enjoy the moments of improv and audience engagement throughout the musical. So get your singing voice ready, and be sure to catch your breathe between laughs, the Grinch is set to take you on a wild ride down the mountain and straight into the hearts of the Whos. You won’t want to miss Cindy Lou Who, the cutest of the Whos, as she shows the Grinch what Christmas is really all about.
