My definition of love at first sight is that feeling I get when I hold my baby for the first time. AB aka Preemie was born 10 weeks premature. When she made her arrival I wasn’t even sure I would be able to hold her right away. Preemie spent the first eight weeks of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. We celebrated many of her “firsts” in the NICU. These weren’t just any typical milestones we celebrated, these were HUGE super important steps that brought her one step closer to coming home!
Like the first time I was able to hold her, skin to skin. Or the first time she was able to drink her breast milk from bottle to confirm she was able to suck and swallow, and then from my breast. There was also the first (and not last) time she ripped out her feeding tube. And then her first time maintaining her temperature, which allowed her to be placed in an open crib and out of the bubble. Firsts come in many different shapes, sizes and joys. Our firsts with Preemie were far different from our firsts with J-bird and Em.
The one thing I will never forget is our first diaper change together. No nurses, no help, just me, doing what I’ve done a million times, for the “first” time. Our hospital carried Pampers Swaddlers diapers in the NICU. I remember pulling out a diaper from the bin under her bubble and wondering how I was going to complete this simple task of changing a diaper, without pulling any wires, tubes or other essentials that were attached to her. The diaper looked HUGE compared to her little tiny self. For weeks she wore nothing but a Pampers Swaddler diaper day and night.
At home we were using a different brand for Em and the softness of the Pampers Swaddlers didn’t go unnoticed. I quickly realized why they are the #1 choice of hospitals in North America* and the first diaper worn by millions of babies. I recall now that we never had to deal with diaper rash during Preemie’s NICU stay, not the case with Em at home. The timing of being introduced to Pampers Swaddlers was perfect because they had just announced that they were expanding the Swaddlers line through size 6. Previously it only went to size 3, and to make life easier I wanted to be able to use the same type of diaper for both girls. Em was just transitioning over into a size 4 so I stocked up with Swaddlers in size 1’s and 4’s before Preemie came home. I am so grateful to all those moms that made their voices heard and told Pampers that they wanted the Pampers Swaddlers softness they know and love to be available throughout their diapering years.
Pampers Swaddlers continue to make our babies happy and keep them dry. Em who wears a size 6 and Preemie who is in a size 4 get up to 12 hours of overnight protection, which is just about how long they sleep at night! The Absorb Away Liner® pulls wetness and mess away from their skin which helps to prevent diaper rash in the girls, something that is hard to combat once it starts. And since neither of them seem to ever be bothered by a wet diaper, the color changing wetness indicator lets me know when they may need to be changed without having to waste diapers.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe how much she has grown since then! She’s now almost 16 months old and recently began taking her first steps. Today she took six or seven steps before hitting the ground to crawl. UPDATE: Check out the video I was able to get of her walking!!! Babies grow so fast, that’s why it’s important to take time and enjoy all of their firsts.

With my first it was the first time I got to hold him. He was a micropreemie and almost 2 weeks old. A baby under 3 pounds feels like a little loaf of bread.
I totally understand the feeling. Preemie was 3lbs 13oz when she was first born! I hope all is well.
