Attending college should be an experience. While incurring small student loans can be built into that experience to teach responsibility, many college students find themselves lost before they even graduate. Owing thousands upon thousands for a degree that will take far more years to pay off than it did to earn, student loan debt puts them into a rabbit hole without a ladder or rope to the top.

Most children have more than enough toys to last them for a while. Instead of receiving more and more unnecessary toys for the holidays, birthdays, and other celebrations, you could ask your friends and family to use the money for a better purpose – helping they finish college debt free.

I recently talked to you about saving for college: 5 reasons to start now. But there really should be only one reason…to give your child a fighting chance once they leave college – DEBT FREE!

Graduates today talk about one main thing – their student loan debt. Estimates from 2011 show college students start their real world life experiences at least $26,000 in debt. Feelings of despair when trying to figure out how they will ever get it paid off should not be a requirement of attending college. Traditional savings accounts don’t provide the same security needed for your child’s future education.

  • This is such a great idea. An easier way to start saving up for college for your kids. My parents paid for my college, but I had a lot of friends who had to take out many loans. I know starting their lives was difficult because they had the debt hanging over their heads.
