In Disney’s The BFG, the giant refuses to eat children and therefore only has a diet of Snozzcumbers (a zucchini/cucumber type vegetable.) It’s described as having a horrible taste, so I wanted to share with you a salad that I grew up eating that is the exact opposite and tastes delicious. It’s a very simple salad and has only 5 ingredients, is easy to make, and very refreshing, especially in the summer months. Allow me to introduce you to my mothers fresh salad – The BFG Snozzcumber Salad.
Comiendo con BFG – The BFG Snozzcumber Salad
The Snozzcumber resembles a cucumber but differs in various respects. The snozzcumber varies from nine to twelve feet long. It is striped lengthwise black and white, with wart-like growths all over its surface. It, along with Frobscottle, is the sole diet of the BFG until he has captured the man-eaters. Having done so, he feeds them snozzcumbers for the rest of their lives – an apparent act of punishment, due to the snozzcumber’s repulsive flavour. Sophie said the Snozzcumber tasted of frogskin and rotten fish, and the BFG said it tasted like cockroaches and slime wanglers.
Since I truly appreciate my friends, I would NEVER feed them a snozzcumber, but I would definitely feed them my version of The BFG Snozzcumber Salad. I suppose that if you are a fan of zucchini you could even toss some into this salad, but it’s really perfect as it is. The girls love to eat cucumbers and tomatoes, and really enjoy this salad with their dinner whenever I make it.

- 4 medium tomatoes
- 2 large english cucumbers
- 1 medium spanish onion
- canola oil
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- salt
- pepper
- Wash tomatoes and scrub the cucumbers.
- Slice tomatoes into 1/4 inch pieces.
- Cut cucumbers in half length wise and then into 1/4 inch pieces.
- Slice onion thinly.
- Add canola oil and vinegar.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Toss the salad to coat evenly.
- Enjoy immediately or allow it to sit in the fridge for a few hours. It is best enjoyed cold.

Synopsis: The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.
