Compassion, leadership, diversity, importance of family and family traditions, strength along with resilience all make up the characteristics of a natural born leader, especially one that is ready to rule her own kingdom. When I think about what these characteristics mean and envision who around me encompasses them, I see my mother – and now as if looking in a mirror, I also see myself. Shortly after my mother arrived to this country I was born. As many immigrants before her she struggled with learning a new language, providing for her family and raising a strong independent young woman. She embodied these characteristics, which I was fortunate to inherit from her, and I hope to pass them onto my own girls – while teaching them to value and respect their Hispanic heritage and culture.

We live in one of the most diverse county and city in the entire world. Growing up in NYC, and now living in Miami, we are surrounded by the Hispanic culture and heritage that make up the dynamics of our household. Latina girls need strong role models that not only look like them, but to which they can relate to through customs and traditions that they too are growing up with which is why mi familia is welcoming Elena of Avalor con besos, abrazos, y flan.
My mother taught me to be so many things, but above all she taught me to care for mi familia by showing me how she much she cared for us. She showed me how to develop the characteristics of a natural born leader.
5 Characteristics of a Natural Born Leader
Leadership: The most important part of being a leader is being able to listen to those around you and keeping an open mind to other ideas. Being a strong leader requires communication skills and understanding.
Resilience: We’ve all been knocked down before, but it’s getting back up, brushing yourself off and moving forward that makes the difference in a natural born leader.
Diversity: Being able to embrace the differences in people and their cultures.
Compassion: Understanding the needs of others around you and respecting those needs.
Importance of family and family traditions: Family first, ALWAYS. A leader leads by example and the importance of family and its traditions shows a persons true values.
These were all characteristics my mother showed me throughout my life. Her leadership in taking charge of our family. Her resilience in making a place for herself in a foreign country. Embracing the diversity around her and welcoming it into her home through her children’s partners and her grandchildren. Compassion for those around her, including her own mother who was unable to car for herself and thus teaching us the importance of family and taking care of each other. I was always surrounded by the love of my family.
Raising Latina girls will bring challenges to our lives, but I know that with all of my Mama’s teachings, I will persevere and my girls will one day grow up to be strong and compassionate leaders too – just like our teachers before us. I was stoked to introduce the girls to Elena of Avalor because she embodies the same characteristics as my mother, and gives my girls a point of reference they can understand at their young age.
We recently had our friends over for the Premiere of Elena of Avalor on the Disney Channel and received a big box full of fun Elena of Avalor craft projects to use during our premiere viewing party.
