Caring For Your Elderly Loved Ones – Living at Home or Assisted Living?

This post, Caring For Your Elderly Loved Ones, is a sponsored post for Merrill Gardens Retirement Community.

J-bird always jokes that when his dad and I get old he is going to place us in a retirement home. To be quite honest with you I prefer he does. I’ll tell you why. When my grandmother had a stroke many years ago my mother insisted on moving her into our home and taking care of her. For 13 years my mother put her life, and many times ours, on hold to care for her 24/7. My grandmother passed away in 2007.

My mother passed away a year later. It broke my heart to know that she didn’t get to enjoy life the way it should have been but maybe taking care of her mother is what she did enjoy. Either way I know both would have enjoyed life a lot more if she would have placed her in an assisted living facility. I won’t hold it against any of my children to make that decision so long as they come to visit me often. I’m a social butterfly, I want to play cards and party when I’m old. I don’t want to be anyone’s burden.

Living at Home or Assisted Living

The time to plan is now. Caing for your elderly loved ones is hard and you should have a discussion with them about living at home or assisted living.

Do you have a plan in place for your parents or even yourself for the future? Now is always a good time to discuss it.
