Mamma Mia The Musical – Farewell Tour – Based On The Music Of ABBA!

Mamma Mia – Here we go again! Broadway in Fort Lauderdale brings back Mamma Mia the Musical for its Farewell Tour to South Florida. In continuation with my partnership with Broadway Across America, I attended opening night of Mamma Mia and I’m sure glad I didn’t miss it. Unfortunately it was only here for a short visit, although you can still catch a performance until May 21st at 8pm. If you have the ability to drop everything and go see, I highly recommend you do.

Mamma Mia!

Featuring the songs of ABBA – classic songs that everyone just wants to get up and dance to – because you’re having the time of your life. The story of Mamma Mia follows a girl, about to get married, on a quest to find her dad. With her wedding just around the corner, she comes across her Mama’s journal and discovers 3 names. With the timeline of a fun summer, all 3 potential suitors could very well be her father, so she invites them all to her wedding. Except she fails to mention it to her Mama – and Mamma Mia does the real fun begin when Mama gets a visit from her past.

Lizzie Markson who plays Sophie – the girl searching for her dad. Lizzie has such a delightful voice, and a beautiful disposition. She sells her role like a professional. Then there’s Bill (Marc Cornes), Sam (Shai Yammanee) warning: Shai’s Australian accent will make you swoon. and Harry (Andrew Tebo.) They’ve arrived to an island in Greece that they haven’t seen in over 20 years. Each with memories of the time they spent with a special someone – but all in the dark about why they’re really back. Being that I haven’t seen the Mamma Mia movie with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan I felt like my mind was clear enough to truly appreciate each actor in their role with comparison. I truly enjoyed them all – but as always, there are standouts.

Dance and Sing – ABBA Style

Like Cashelle Butler (Tanya), Betsy Padamonsky (Donna aka Mama) and Sarah Smith (Rosie). Best friends since childhood, reunited for the wedding of the year, these women sure know how to party. Sarah was a riot, and a scene stealer, especially when coupled with Marc (Bill). They’re just having the time of their lives!

This was definitely one of the funniest scenes ever – the fiancé about to be taken by his buddies to search for the pearl necklace in the ocean for good fortune. It’s been a while since I’ve laughed this hard during a musical. And the laughs were plenty – especially with the amazing audience in attendance. I’m so glad I got to see Mamma Mia for its farewell tour. Mamma Mia the musical is hitting the list of shows I’ll definitely see again. But first, I’m going to check out Streep and Brosnan in the movie since it was just announced that a sequel is coming Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

Should you bring the kids – NO. This is a musical to be enjoyed by those of age. Why? Because there are scenes that just aren’t appropriate. I was surprised to see some young kids in the audience, but it was far and few between. While I think my five-year-old would enjoy the music, the material would lose her. Make it a date night or girls night out instead.

Mamma Mia the Musical runs for 2 hours and 35 minutes, which includes one (1) fifteen-minute intermission. Food, snacks and beverages are available for purchase. You cannot bring food inside the theatre for this performance. The last performance is at 8pm on May 21, 2017. Mamma Mia the Musical is playing at the The Broward Center for the Performing Arts located at 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Ft Lauderdale, FL, 33312. Tickets are available for purchase here or by calling the Box Office at 954.462.0222. Be sure to visit Broadway Across America for details about upcoming Broadway shows coming to South Florida!
