Ding-Dong, Hello! The Book of Mormon Has Arrived!

Want to see the funniest musical comedy to ever hit Broadway? Now’s your chance! Last night I attended the opening night of The Book of Mormon thanks to my continued partnership with Broadway Across America. The countless shows I’ve seen off-Broadway have never stuck with me as much as last years national tour of The Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon on Tour

There wasn’t an empty seat in the house last night, and I would be willing to bet tickets are selling out pretty quickly. Fans of Broadway are returning to see The Book of Mormon again and again. It’s just that funny. Selling out night after night The Book of Mormon, from the creators of South Park, is proving to be the show of the year not to be missed by South Floridians. Winner of nine Tony Awards including “Best Musical”! From Trey Parker and Matt Stone, four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of “South Park,” and Tony Award-winner Robert Lopez, co-creator of the Tony Award–winning Best Musical Avenue Q, comes THE BOOK OF MORMON, a new religious satire Broadway musical.

Since I’ve seen the show already – and written about it, I knew what an amazing night this was going to be. I was not disappointed, nor was my guest. In fact, the guy sitting behind me kept saying how much he loved the show and by the end all he could mutter was “Amazing, amazing AMAZING!” You can take my word for it, but you really shouldn’t. In fact, I hope you already got your tickets, if not, get them and do it quickly. You don’t want to miss seeing the show the entire world is talking about! Even the press hasn’t stopped raving about it!

“The funniest musical of all time!”Entertainment Weekly

Jon Stewart of The Daily Show describes as “a crowning achievement, so good it makes me angry.”

Ben Brantley of The New York Times calls “the best musical of this century.”

Let me preface this saying that the Ryan Bondy who plays Elder Price reminds me of a young Jim Carrey, which makes his role in this ten times even better! Be on the lookout for those funny Jim Carrey faces. Candace Quarrels plays the Nabulungi and has the voice of an angel. And the role and dance moves of Elder McKinley played by Daxton Bloomquist are show stopping. Our very own University of Miami Alum David Aron Damane takes on the role of the General – who has the funniest name, but you’ll have to hear it for yourself. But by far it’s the antics of Elder Cummingham, played by Cody Jamison Strand, that really put the icing on the cake!

Book of Mormon Tour

As the show begins you see a group of young Mormon at “training camp” getting ready to graduate and embark on their missions. Elder Price and Elder Cunningham are sent off to Uganda. What’s funny about this? EVERYTHING. Think of the most oddest couple being paired together and then sent to a remote location that is the exact opposite of where they want to be – it’s definitely not the fantasy land of Orlando, Elder Prices’ dream destination. Picture two white boys trying to sell religion to a group of skeptical and higher power cursing people in the middle of Africa. Really, you just gotta go see the show. It’s hard to describe the show without giving it all away!

From the opening act to the closing act, the laughs were rolling non-stop. This was a no holds barred event, everybody was a target. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying you should laugh at religion or people. What I am saying is be prepared. It’s a sort of twisted sense of humor one must have to appreciate this show, definitely be prepared because this is a SATIRE musical. If you aren’t sure what satire means, the Oxford dictionary defines it as: “The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.” That being said, if you like a good comedy, you are going to love this.

From the musical numbers of, “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream”, “Turn It Off”, to visits Hitler, Johnny Cochran, Darth Vader and Yoda, there isn’t a moment you won’t be laughing. Okay, I’ve already said too much, and I don’t want to ruin this for you, so go forth, “Man Up” and get your tickets!

The Book Of Mormon

The parental guide lists this show as “contains explicit language“; I would refrain from bringing young children to the show! There is a lot of strong material that some young ones will not understand, and other material you may not want them to hear or have to explain. A true appreciation for a raunchy, twisted and darker sense of humor is necessary for all attendees.Perfect for a date night with your significant other or a girls/boys night out.

The Book Of Mormon runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes, which includes one (1) fifteen minute intermission. Food, snacks and beverages are available for purchase. Drinks are allowed inside but food will need to be consumed outside the theater for this performance.
